Concept & Program

This workshop is inspired by the following excerpt, from Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s Italian Journey (1786-1788):

“At present I am preoccupied with sense-impressions… The truth is that, in putting my powers of observation to the test, I have found a new interest in life. How far will my scientific and general knowledge take me: Can I learn to look at things with clear, fresh eyes? How much can I take in at a single glance? Can the grooves of old mental habits be effaced? This is what I am trying to discover”.

As we emerge from a year and a half of fear, uncertainty, isolation, disruption, disease and disillusion, this workshop will explore how photography can “put our powers of observation to the test” and allow us to “look at things with clear, fresh eyes” in order to reveal and renew our interest in life itself. Led by the American artist, writer and curator, Aaron Schuman, it will explore how “sense-impressions”, intuition, imagination, spontaneity and acute observation – alongside memories and various histories – can collectively form and fuel our creative processes moving forward, and lead to new and meaningful discoveries that are both personal and photographic.

The workshop will be four days long, and will consist of one day of artist-talks and discussions around these themes, followed by three days of intensive making, during which participants will collectively create and produce a new photographic exhibition – In Life – with Schuman’s editorial and curatorial guidance, to be presented and hosted by Foto|hub.

Conceived in and for Pontremoli, the workshop will be end with the exhibition opening, a talk and event in cooperation with the local community.
